How is the reading time worked out?

From an average reading speed of 238 words a minute, and 150 words a minute for speaking out loud. Your own speed may be faster or slower

Can I count the characters too?

Yes, the characters with and without spaces are shown next to the words. To check your text against the limits of Instagram, X, TikTok or Google, use the Character Counter

What is a word counter?

A word counter shows how many words are in your text as you type or paste it. It's useful when you need to stay within a word limit, shorten something you've written or check how long it might take someone to read.

This tool also counts characters, sentences, paragraphs, hashtags and mentions. You can see estimated reading and speaking times, as well as which words appear most often.

When is a word counter useful?

  • Social media captions: check the length of a caption before posting and see whether it might be too long
  • Blog posts and articles: track your word count and get an idea of the reading time
  • Essays and applications: stay within a required word count
  • Editing your writing: find words you repeat often and decide whether to rephrase some sentences
  • Speeches and presentations: estimate how long your text will take to read aloud
